THE ISLAND BEHIND THE LAVENDER

Sacred Mountain Lavender Farm, salt Spring Island

SacredMountainLavender_SangreDeFruta.jpg

Salt Spring Island is a very special Island off the West Coast of British Columbia. Locals know it as the home of the award winning Salt Spring Island Goat Cheese farm, and as the Gulf Island with such a rich artisan community that they have their own local currency to support local artisans and farmers.

A couple months ago I picked up my English Lavender directly from Sacred Mountain Farm, on Salt Spring. Even though the farm was officially closed for the winter, Ben one of the owners welcomed me to drop by and was kind enough to give me a tour of the farm and sell me some of his precious English Lavender essential oil.

They have a beautiful educational patch with samples of close to a hundred varieties of Lavender. Such a pleasure smelling the different varieties. I never knew lavender could have white flowers rather than violet. So pretty. There’s a small shop with various lavender products and you can tour the surprisingly simple manufacturing sheds and drying room. If you should end up on the island it really is a wonderful experience. Perfect when combined with an afternoon of winery and artisan studio visits.

Voted one of the “World’s Best Islands” by Condé Nast Traveller and “Canada’s Coolest Island” by the Washington Post, Salt Spring is an artist colony of only 10,000 people situated off the coast of Vancouver, accessible by float plane and ferry.

Their English Lavender can be found in our Lavender by the Sea Botanical body cream. It really is something special.
