How would you describe your artistic style in a few words?
Dark, folky, playful
What kinds of imagery or themes are you most drawn to in your work?
Animals have always played a huge part in my subject matter because of their character, but I also love the raw, traditional imagery of female nudes. Which is why mermaids are such a constant feature as they’re such a unique combination of the two!
Can you share a bit about your creative process—how do your pieces typically come to life?
My practice is split between traditional hands-on painting, and digital illustration, but there are definitely common threads that run through both. I don’t like to plan anything out, and tend to go straight in without thinking: I find that the raw nativity that comes from that approach is what results in the best work. My favourite part is always adding the eye to whatever I’m drawing/ painting, as that’s when you find out their character.
Where do you usually look for inspiration, both inside and outside the art world?
I’m an addictive collector and am obsessed with finding unusual art books and objects. I really believe in feeding your brain with visual inspiration, so both my home and studio are eclectic nests of colour, texture and shape. I’ve always had a love of folk and outside art, so if I’m ever stuck for inspiration then these are where I turn.
Here at Sangre, we’re all about rituals, from morning tea to a nightly botanical face massage.
Do you have any rituals or habits that help you get into the creative zone? The first thing I do when I get into my studio is light an Astier de Villatte incense, and let my pet pigeon Raisin out for an explore. Although my workspace is busy, I like everything to be in its place before I can create, so I normally give everything a sort out, put some music or a podcast on, and get stuck in.
