Celebrating Imbolc: Botanical rituals for the season of awakening

Celebrating Imbolc: Botanical rituals for the season of awakening

2 minute read

February 1 marks Imbolc (Brigid’s Day in the Pagan Wheel of the Year), the hidden hinge, the middle of winter solstice and spring equinox.

The land is not yet awake, but it is listening. Ice softens, light lingers, and beneath the cold crust of the earth, seeds begin to murmur. A season of quiet ignition, where new life and creative force begin to stir.

Season

Spring

The name Imbolc translates to “in the belly,” a phrase that gestures toward life stirring unseen, the first step of becoming.

In Irish Gaelic, Oimelc means “ewe’s milk,” an image of nourishment—fertility, sustenance, and the steady care that allows creation to take form.

These meanings speak to the season’s maternal pulse, and offer a reminder to honor beginnings that unfold slowly, and the inspiration born from fertile, patient ground.

Herbs and scents:

  • Rosemary is traditionally linked to clarity, memory, and spiritual purification, making it excellent for rituals that focus your intentions and clear mental space.

  • Lavender promotes calm, balance, and emotional clarity, which supports reflective work like goal‑setting or creative visualization.

  • Chamomile invites soothing energy and gentle renewal, perfect for easing into the seasonal shift of Imbolc.

  • Neroli is uplifting and helps foster confidence and joy, making it ideal for rituals that set creative or heartfelt intentions for the year ahead.

  • Rose is a timeless symbol of love, beauty, and inspiration, amplifying Imbolc’s energy of blossoming potential.

Rituals

During this time period, we lean into products with cedarwood, sandalwood, or vetiver oils to bring a grounding vibration, anchoring intent and helping us stay rooted in your goals.

We find these earthy scents to be particularly supportive in ritual contexts where we’re planting intentions and wanting both inspiration and steady focus throughout the year.

Ritual Cleansing:

Use a botanical tonic mist to purify your space or altar at the start of your Imbolc practice — spray into the air or on linens before meditation.

We suggest: Neroli Forever, Lavender by the Sea, Rose No 1 and Garden of Earthly Delights

Anointing for Intention‑Setting:

Apply lotion, body cream, or serum to your hands, belly or pulse points while stating your intentions for renewal, clarity, or creative goals.

We suggest: Garden of Earthly Delights or Neroli Noir lotion, Lavender by the Sea, Neroli Forever or Rose No 1 body cream, Psyche flower nectar face oil

Sensory Grounding:

Neroli‑ or rose‑scented products to deepen inspiration and open your heart to the possibilities ahead, especially in visualization or journaling practices.

We suggest: Neroli Forever or Rose no. 1 roll-ons

Aromatic Baths:

Mix a small amount of body wash with warm water to create a ritual bath that symbolizes letting go of the old and welcoming new growth, enhanced by the earthy and floral notes that mirror Imbolc themes.

We suggest: Garden of Earthly Delights body wash
